The task:
High-speed milling and precision machining require rotary encoders that must also work reliably in
confined spaces and at extremely high speeds. In the conventional application, rotary encoders are
coupled directly to the drive shaft; the disadvantage of this approach is that mounting space has
to be sacrificed.
Method of solution:
The alternative is the GEL 2442 compact encoder which features a target wheel mounted directly on
the drive shaft as the measuring scale. This enables the sensor to be integrated into motor
spindles. Output signals can be either standard sine wave or square wave. The signals are applied
directly to the converter. Unlike comparable products, there is no need for any additional
electronics between the encoder and the converter.
Our solution:
The precision encoder presented here is probably the smallest of its kind. The mounting kit
consists of a GEL 2442 encoder and a precision target wheel mounted directly on the drive shaft as
the measuring scale. This combination creates a simple, space-saving solution for the incremental
measurement of displacement, angles and speeds.

A particular benefit is that toothed wheels can be mounted on drive shafts of different diameters
and the encoder is coupled directly to the drive without any coupling elements. The GEL 2442 is
fully encapsulated, enabling it to be deployed at temperatures up to 120°C, in dust, water, oil
mist and steam under high vibration stress without any problem.
